Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage
Known to be one of the most entertaining destinations in Sri Lanka, the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is a sanctuary that looks after elephants in its natural habitat. The elephant orphanage houses a horde of elephants, in addition to other wildlife, giving visitors a rare glimpse to observe wildlife in its natural territory.
The best times to visit the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is in the morning or mid-day hours when these gentle beasts take their bath in the river. The spectacle of elephants splashing and playing in the shallow water is not to be missed and visitors are permitted to interact with the elephants during the bathing and feeding times.

The elephant orphanage was formed with the aim of providing care and shelter for elepahnts that are lost in the wilderness, abandonned or oprhant baby elepahnts, injured or sick.
Pinnawala Elephant orphanage can be reached through the Colombo – Kandy main road, a turn off at the 82 km post at Kegalle will lead you to the orphanage. The distance from Colombo is approximately 90 km and 50 km from Kandy. Those who are traveling by train, the nearest railway station is Rambukkana which is 2 km from the orphanage.
