Located in the North-West part of Trincomalee in the Eastern Coast of Sri Lanka, the Nilaveli beach is where the brilliant blue waters of the Indian Ocean caress the sun-kissed sands of this splendid, unspoilt beach and the waves rise and fall to a gentle serenade. The beach and its natural harbor are one of the finest of its kind in the world and it offers the ideal setting for sunbathing, surfing, scuba diving, wind surfing, fishing, whale watching or just kicking back and relaxing.
The Nilaveli Beach’s location on the East Coast has meant that it has remained blissfully immaculate due to the decades of civil war that kept the majority of tourist as well as developers out of the region. Bordered by lazily swaying palm tress, the wide, golden stretches of serene sandy beaches which gently slope into the crystal clear blue sea, the tiny fishing boats dotted sparingly around, the distinct lack of crowds, the breathtaking beauty of the sunrises and sunsets, and the peace and quiet of the beach all make it an ideal spot for those looking to take a break from the daily hustle and bustle.
Nilaveli is also home to a delightful little landmass with its own coral reef- Pigeon Island- one of the two Marine National Parks in Sri Lanka. The island, floating a few kilometers away from the coastline flaunts startlingly clear waters that make it the ideal place to witness the breathtaking underwater scenery as well as swimming, diving and snorkeling.
