PASSIKUDAH BAY AND KALKUDAH BEACH
Located on the East Coast of Sri Lanka and nestled along two bays of the same name, the twin beaches of Passikudah and Kalkudah are justifiably one of the best beaches in the entire world, especially during the summer season from May to September. Passikudah is a beautiful soft carved bay with calm waters and is well protected by a shallow off shore reef. The Kalkudah beach is wide and long and spreads along just south of Pasikudah. The beach is also home to brightly hued shoals of tropical fishes and exotic coral reefs. The combined beaches of Pasikudah and Kalkudah make for an idyllic and relaxing seaside retreat.
Both beaches offer excellent swimming conditions, thanks to the gently sloping seabed and the placid and crystal-clear waters. Pasikudah, in particular, is renowned to have one of the longest stretches of shallow coastlines in the world. The shared shores of Passikudah and Kalkudah are reef secured and thus the ocean waves and currents are a lot calmer compared to the rest of the island. The Passikudah bay is enclosed by one of the best known coral reef systems, making it an enjoyable and fascinating place to snorkel and dive in the clear azure-blue waters. Both beaches have plenty to offer besides snorkeling and diving with fishing, boat rides, wind surfing and sunbathing being the most popular activities.
The sugar-white sands, the shallow, clear waters, the vibrant coral reefs and the soaring palm trees fringing both beaches, a visit to the shores of this tranquil setting is an unmatched experience in itself.
